Reviving the Brass: Almada Trumpet

A Harmonious Blend of Heritage and Innovation

Unveiling the Almada Trumpet, a musical masterpiece by Ermanno Aparo, that harmoniously blends tradition and innovation, resurrecting a brass instrument lost in time and transforming the production of musical instruments in Portugal.

The Almada Trumpet is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation. This project is the result of a strategic network of companies, most of which are operating in the musical instruments sector for the first time. The trumpet showcases new technical and aesthetic solutions, such as the use of filigree valve slides rings and different layers in the product surface to adjust the sound and make it warmer. The trumpet has been produced with a variety of processes, ranging from craft techniques to 3D Print technology and industrial processes.

The design of the Almada Trumpet is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Portugal. The trumpet's red/brown colour echoes the hues of Oporto wine, and the watermark of Portuguese jewellery. The trumpet also draws structural references from the music world, incorporating shapes and geometry from historical and international trumpet brands, including Portuguese brands.

The production of the Almada Trumpet involved a variety of materials and techniques. The bell, the lead-pipe, and the main tuning slide were made of copper using craft processes. The valve block was made with CNC-like production systems. The nickel receiver, valve caps and piston buttons were produced with a CNC lathe, and the filigree slides rings were created with a jewellery manual process.

The Almada Trumpet is not just a design marvel but a fully functional instrument. It has been experimented and played by more than 60 national and international musicians. The trumpet was produced, mostly, in the North of Portugal and has been part of music concerts at Viana do Castelo (POR) and Agrigento (ITA). It was also used in several Masterclasses of three Portuguese institutions in the cities of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Mealhada.

This project faced and overcame several research challenges, primarily focused on creating a territorial network of companies. The use of copper as a raw material and the technique of working different layers in the product surface allowed a precise, smooth, and warm sound. The rings in filigree added value in the production of the trumpet. The upper parts of the finger buttons received stone, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the instrument.

The Almada Trumpet is a testament to the role of design as a mediator of a productive network. It validates that it is possible to create complex objects through collaboration and innovation. The trumpet has been awarded Silver in A' Musical Instruments Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
